Joey’s 1st Birthday Party

Even though I photographed Joey’s 1st birthday party a few years ago, I wanted to share these images from his party.  🙂

I feel like these portraits properly represent the variety of images that I still photograph at children’s birthday parties.  I focus most of my photography on the birthday boy or girl, pay attention to some of the party theme details, and then include interactions between the birthday child and his closest family members.  Siblings and parents, and some times grandparents and godparents.

At children’s birthday parties, I’m naturally drawn to capturing close-ups of the kids – particularly the stars of the show – and not bothering much with most of the guests.  I tend to stay right by the birthday babe, checking in with the parents continuously throughout the party.

While I am constantly touching base with the parents, organizers, and hosts of parties, I really do feel like a fly on the wall.  I’m there to document both the details and the important stuff.  The happy emotions and the mellow moments.  The pre-party preparations and the clean-up crew at the end of the event.
