This summer, I drove to Dallas, Texas, to photograph Bella.  (Her gorgeous galleries are featured in Bella Summer 2018 and Bella in Her Home.)  It was there in Dallas, that I met Bella’s best friend Papi.  Although I was there to primarily photograph Bella, I couldn’t help but snap some portraits of Papi too.

Papi’s Story

Papi was toughin’ it on the rough streets of Tonga when he met his person.  She was an American gal living in Tonga to serve others through the Peace Corps.  After Papi met her, he didn’t want to leave her side.  He could tell she needed his companionship, and he dedicated himself to her until her Peace Corps experience was complete.  In December 2009, when she was leaving to return to America, she knew she wanted to take Papi with her.

Have you ever seen those paw print bumpers stickers that read “Who Rescued Who?”  I think Papi’s story is a perfect example of a dog and a human equally needing and “saving” each other.

Since 2009, Papi has been living very comfortably in Texas.  His life now couldn’t be further from how it began in Tonga.  In fact, he’s so comfortable that he has earned himself the nickname “Princess Papi.”  Gone are the days of sleeping on hard streets and being stuck out in the rain.  He insists on the finest of dog beds and some times refuses to go outside to go potty if it’s raining.

I love his underbite.  He’s so cute that I just want to bite his beak!!

Pet Photographer

As a Colorado pet photographer, I specialize in Denver dog photography.

I’ve been photographing pets artistically since 2001.  At Southwestern Illinois Collegein Belleville, Illinois, where I earned my Associate of Arts, I purchased my very first film camera.  During this time, I learned how to use my new camera by practicing on my family’s pets, loading long negative film strips and then developing those black and white prints in the darkroom.  Click here to read more about that.

In 2002, when I started working on my Bachelor of Fine Arts at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, I began photographing pets digitally.

When I launched Sweet Green Photography in 2015, I passionately printed my pet portraits on hardcover books and gallery wrap canvases.

It’s exciting to be a pet photographer in Colorado because I am surrounded by beautiful, happy dogs everywhere!  Colorado loves their canine companions, and I love capturing the quirks, warmth, and gentle souls of these dogs in their own personal photo shoots.
