Another Side of Bella

In my previous post, Bella Summer 2018, I wrote about meeting Bella and shared the portraits that I took of her in her backyard.  Photographing Bella in her home revealed some quieter moments in a more intimate setting.

I love observing dogs in nature.  They enjoy the fresh air, the warm sunshine, the cool grass, the stinky smells.  But when I photograph pet portraits, I equally love photographing dogs inside their homes.  Seeing Bella in her home gave me a glimpse of her everyday snoozing spots, sleepy smiles, and soft paws.

As a professional photographer, I take my job very seriously.  I feel a great responsibility to diligently document details.  I understand the intense importance of photography to humans.  I’m always honored that I’m entrusted with the task of capturing people, pets, and moments.  It’s a big job, and I feel that when I’m photographing.

Beautiful Bella is 14 years old.  And although she is in fine health, she’s still an old dog…especially by German Shepherd and Siberian Husky breed standards.  Because of that, I couldn’t keep myself from crying silently as I watched her sleep.  In those moments, I knew how important those photographs would be.  My heart felt heavy with honor and love, and I cried as I thought about this sweet dog and what an amazing gift photography is to us humans.

Pet Photographer

As a Colorado pet photographer, I specialize in Denver dog photography.

I’ve been photographing pets artistically since 2001.  At Southwestern Illinois Collegein Belleville, Illinois, where I earned my Associate of Arts, I purchased my very first film camera.  During this time, I learned how to use my new camera by practicing on my family’s pets, loading long negative film strips and then developing those black and white prints in the darkroom.  Click here to read more about that.

In 2002, when I started working on my Bachelor of Fine Arts at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, I began photographing pets digitally.

When I launched Sweet Green Photography in 2015, I passionately printed my pet portraits on hardcover books and gallery wrap canvases.

It’s exciting to be a pet photographer in Colorado because I am surrounded by beautiful, happy dogs everywhere!  Colorado loves their canine companions, and I love capturing the quirks, warmth, and gentle souls of these dogs in their own personal photo shoots.
