My 5 Favorite Artists to Listen to in Autumn
Autumn Has Arrived!
It finally feels like fall, doesn’t it?
A couple of weeks ago, it was still hitting 80 outside, I was still walking Max in just a T-shirt and flip flops, and I couldn’t even imagine wearing my Cuddl Duds.
Well, it certainly feels like summer has left for good now. (And the Cuddl Duds are on!)
In addition to burning woodsy and campfire-scented candles, I’ve been in the mood for sipping tea and listening to my fall music.
Music for the Seasons
I listen to different music specifically during different times of the year.
In the spring, I like my U2, Coldplay, The Beach Boys, and 90s music.
In the summer, it’s a lot of indie pop, new country, and Hawaiian.
In the winter, I need my classic country, David Gray, and Christmas music.
In the fall, I prefer about 85% Van Morrison, with the remaining 15% a mix of Beth Orton, John Mayer, Counting Crows, and Fleetwood Mac.
I’ve been listening to Counting Crows since I was in 6th grade. But I first began listening to Van, Beth, John, and Fleetwood Mac during autumn of different years of my life. Fleetwood Mac took hold of me in 1999, Van in 2000, John in 2001, and Beth in 2003.
Every year since then, as autumn sets in and the sky turns gray, I yearn for the comfort of these artists. Their voices, familiar words, and music makes me feel like I’m having a constant conversation with a close friend.
I selected 5 songs from each of them that always have a good, “fall” feeling to them for me. Enjoy! 🙂
Van Morrison
At 85%, Van is my ultimate autumn artist. I don’t even know how I was able to narrow him down to only 5 songs for this. He’s so perfect for fall that I could give entire albums as faves.
Oh, you’re curious as to what those would be? Sure, I’ll share with you my top 5 Van albums for fall:
- Back on Top
- Avalon Sunset
- Hard Nose the Highway
- Magic Time
- Poetic Champions Compose
Assuming most folks aren’t as obsessed as I am, I have what I consider to be 5 great Van songs for fall:
- Golden Autumn Day
- Tupelo Honey
- When the Leaves Come Falling Down
- Stranded
- Orangefield
Beth Orton
Beth is beautiful.
A Joni Mitchell fan, I was drawn to Beth, as I kept catching articles in magazines recommending me to check her out for their similarities.
I’m usually not big on female singers, but I do love me some Beth Orton.
Here’s 5 lovely Beth songs for fall:
- Central Reservation
- Stolen Car
- Don’t Wanna Know ‘Bout Evil
- Conceived
- She Cries Your Name
John Mayer
I always forget that I’m a John Mayer fan. I never consider him one of my favorite musicians, and I don’t know that he’d even make my Top 20. But I really do enjoy his music.
I heard “83” on the Serendipity soundtrack, and I’ve been listening since then. If you ever listen to the lyrics to “83,” and you understand my appreciation for childhood nostalgia, you’ll get why I liked it.
Anyway, I’m a bit scattered on which albums of his I prefer over others, but I can definitely always do John in autumn.
5 relaxing John songs for fall:
- Back to You
- St. Patrick’s Day
- Gravity
- Perfectly Lonely
- Shadow Days
Counting Crows
Counting Crows complement fall like a pair of warm wool socks.
Some of their songs are better suited for spring and summer, but these ones have autumn written all over them:
- High Life
- Perfect Blue Buildings
- Miami
- Goodnight Elisabeth
- Up All Night
Fleetwood Mac
Ahhh, Fleetwood Mac…where do I even start with my love for Fleetwood Mac?!
They are perfect.
All. Year. Long.
These songs are particularly nice to listen to in autumn:
- As Long As You Follow
- Sara
- Silver Springs
- Over My Head
- Sentimental Lady
Your Turn!
